Dutchtown West Block Captain Training

When: Sunday, August 28, 2011

Time: 3:00 PM (The training should take approx 1 hour)

Where: St Louis City Police Department – South Patrol Division

The Dutchtown West Block Captain Training and Refresher Course has officially been scheduled! Special thanks to our Dutchtown Community Outreach Officer, Keith Novara for securing our meeting location.

Dutchtown is turning around thanks to it’s concerned residents! To ensure our success, we are looking to have 2 Block Captains on every block of our neighborhood. Block Captains help keep an eye on what is going on in their neighborhood (crime, problem properties, etc.), serve as a resource for neighborhood information, and enhance the lines of communication with neighbors on your block. This is an excellent way to meet your neighbors to discuss and address the issues and concerns that we all see on a daily basis.

The email was sent to everyone that signed up to be a block captain. If you have any friends / neighbors that would like to be a block captain, please forward this email to them. All current block captains are also encouraged to attend. We are looking forward to a great turnout.

***HEAT WARNING*** The National Weather Service has issued an excessive Heat Warning through Tuesday as the Heat index will be upward of 110 degrees. There will be a break Wednesday & Thursday but the heat will return Friday and go through next weekend. Stay hydrated, keep cool and try to stay indoors. Be sure to check on neighbors & pets as this is dangerous weather especially for those without adequate cooling. Residents in need of assistance should call United Way at 2-1-1.

Block Captain Training: July 24th @ 4 PM

We are looking to have a Block Captain on every block of our neighborhood to help keep an eye on what is going on in your area (crime, problem properties, etc.), serve as a resource for neighborhood information, and enhance the lines of communication with neighbors on your block.

We need volunteers who are interested in being a block captain in our DWNA area (see map here)!

The next Block Captain Training and Refresher Training will be held on Sunday, July 24th at Grbic’s Restaurant and Banquet Center (4071 Keokuk St., St. Louis, MO 63116) from 4 PM-6 PM. All other Block Captains are requested to attend.

CITY OFFICES CLOSED MONDAY, MAY 30 – TRASH COLLECTION SCHEDULE TO CHANGE

City offices, City Courts, and the Municipal Garage will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

The City of St. Louis Refuse Division would like to remind residents with roll carts that the trash collection schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the Memorial Day holiday.

Residents who normally have their roll carts collected on Mondays and Thursdays will have their trash collected on Tuesday, May 31st and on Thursday, June 2nd.

Residents who normally have their roll carts collected on Tuesdays and Fridays will receive trash collection on Wednesday, June 1st and recyclables collected on Friday, June 3rd.

The yard waste collection regularly scheduled for roll carts on Wednesday, June 1st is canceled due to the holiday. Roll cart yard waste collection will resume on its regular schedule, Wednesday, June 8th.

In response to the recent rash of crimes in District One and the obvious and justified concern of our citizens, I am holding a “ Town Hall “ meeting tomorrow night, May 11^th, at 7p.m. This meeting will be held at Grbic’s Restaurant located at 4071 Keokuk. I plan to discuss these crimes as well as the police response. I will also speak about several new initiatives that have begun in the First District. Please pass the word along to your constituents. I want this to be well attended so that people understand that the Police Department is aware, is concerned and has a plan – and that success will require cooperation from them as well. MoDOT Closes Delor Bridge Over I-55 on March 14
A full closure of I-55 will take place March 18-21 to remove bridge

ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the Delor Bridge over Interstate 55 starting Monday, March 14 to remove and replace this bridge. Motorists affected by this bridge closure can detour to Virginia, Bates, Loughborough or 4500 South Broadway. During construction, there will be various lane closures on Interstate 55 throughout the bridge replacement project. The Delor Bridge is expected to reopen in early October 2011.

There will be a full closure of Interstate 55 from Carondelet to 4500 Broadway starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, March 18 and reopening by 5 a.m. on Monday, March 21 to allow the contractor to safely remove the bridge. Motorists can use the following detour while this section of Interstate 55 is closed:

· Southbound I-55 – Exit at Broadway and turn left. Turn right on River City Casino Boulevard. Continue to Carondelet Avenue and follow to I-55.

· Northbound I-55 – Exit at Carondelet and turn right. Continue on River City Casino Boulevard. Turn left on Broadway and follow to I-55.

This construction is part of the Interstate 55 Bridge Replacement Project to remove and replace the Holly Hills and Delor Bridges. Both of them were built in the early 1960s and have deteriorated beyond the point of simply repairing the bridges.

The Holly Hills and Delor Bridges will be built in the same location with a higher clearance over the interstate to meet current Federal Highway standards. MoDOT will also upgrade the sidewalks and pedestrian ramps to American Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Replacing both the Holly Hills and Delor Bridges costs a total of $3 million dollars. The entire Interstate 55 Bridge Replacement Project is expected to be complete by the end of 2011.

WARMING STATIONS

This week we are expected to get significant amounts of ice and snow combined with very low temperatures. Please check on your older and disabled neighbors to make sure they are staying warm and have enough food. JURY DUTY FRAUD: BE AWARE

BE AWARE: This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email
address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury DUTY coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the Scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado , AZ and more. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.
