Dog Days of Summer

The dog days of August will soon be upon us, but a number of exciting  neighborhood events are scheduled for the last days of July in St.Louis.  Be sure to stay hydrated, check on your neighbors and relatives to make sure they’re OK, take care with your pets and remember that a cooling center is just a phone call away at 2-1-1.  Heat-related illness is not to be taken lightly.

Breakfast for Bikers

For those of you who bike to work to or from Downtown, on the last Wednesday of every month, in this case Wednesday, July 28, Trailnet and the Downtown Partnership for St. Louis sponsor coffee and bagels for cyclists from 6:30 – 9:30 a.m. at Old Post Office Plaza, 9th and Locust.  Stop by on your way to work and meet fellow cyclists while enjoying breakfast.

Pet Adoption Fair

Looking to add a four-legged furry friend to your family?  The City of St. Louis will be holding a Pet Adoption Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 28 at City Court Plaza, 1520 Market Street. Come Downtown and see if the perfect pet is waiting for you at the fair.

No home should be without a rain barrel. To qualify for the MSD rain barrel purchase, you must be an MSD customer and you must be current on your sewer bill.  You must bring a copy of your current MSD bill or photo I.D. to the sale.  All sales are final.  Visit http://www.stlmsd.com/ for additional information.  The cost is $65 per 55-gallon barrel, which includes a kit and installation instructions.  Only cash and checks will be accepted for payment.  On site installation demonstrations will be available as well.

Part D’s coverage gap- sometimes referred to as the “doughnut hole”- will receive a one-time $250 rebate check. This “doughnut hole” occurs when an individual recipient’s total medication costs reach $2,830 as calculated from the beginning of 2010. Every Medicare recipient naturally reaches this number at a different time. When medication costs reach $2,830, a recipient’s Part D plan notifies Medicare to cut him or her a check for $250.00.
Many criminals capitalize on this standard process by attempting to steal  individuals’ checks through a range of scams.

To avoid becoming a victim, remember:

1. You do not have to do anything to qualify for this rebate check.
2. The check will be mailed by regular mail to your address.
3. You will get the check when you arrive in the “Doughnut Hole.” If you know you have  reached the coverage gap but haven’t received your check contact Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.
4. If you have recently moved or are about to move contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to ensure your correct address is on file.
5. The $250 rebate check is not taxable. It is a free gift, and does not add to the amount you must spend to get out of the coverage gap.

Do not believe anyone who says your must supply your bank account, Medicare, or Social Security number to receive a check and do not pay anyone a fee or a tax. Anyone who demands this information is attempting to scam you.

You know it’s summer when Ted Drewes opens up again! They now are open for business from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, seven days a week. 

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard has become an integral part of St. Louis over the years…and one of their two locations (4224 S Grand Blvd.) is located right here in the Dutchtown West Neighborhood! 

According to their website, Ted Drewes Sr. first opened Ted Drewes Frozen Custard at the South Grand location in 1931.

At our most recent meeting we shared the preliminary design for the painted fire hydrants and mosaic/painted electrical boxes to soon be created and a part of our neighborhood in Dutchtown West. 

A DWNA resident had brought up the idea last fall after they saw a link to the Saint Louis Urban Workshop blog, which talked about how the Grove neighborhood in Forrest Park South East is branding themselves by painting their fire hydrants.

We solicited your feedback and the help of our Aldermen this idea will soon become a reality! Thanks to all those who have helped to make this a reality.
